Agorodd ddrysau Ysgol Gymraeg Ifor Hael ar y 3ydd o Fedi, 2008. Lleolwyd yr ysgol ar hen safle Ysgol Gynradd St David Lewis RC ym Metws. Dechreuodd 29 o blant yr ysgol o ardaloedd gorllewinol y Sir yn ein dosbarthiadau meithrin, derbyn a blwyddyn 1.

Mae’r ysgol wedi cael ei henwi ar ôl Ifor Hael, Ifor ap Llywelyn, o Fasaleg. Ifor Hael oedd mab Llywelyn ap Ifor ac Angharad Morgan o Dredegar, ac yr oedd yn byw yn llys Gwern y Cleppa yn Nhredegar yn y 14eg ganrif. Noddodd Ifor y bardd Dafydd ap Gwilym. Ysgrifennodd y bardd am Ifor Hael yn ei farddoniaeth. Mae cyfraniad Dafydd ap Gwilym i farddoniaeth Cymraeg a’r iaith Gymraeg yn bwysig iawn ac mae’n ganlyniad i haelioni Ifor Hael, a llawer tebyg iddo, fod gennym gymaint o dreftadaeth Gymreig gyfoethog heddiw.

Ysgol Gymraeg Ifor Hael opened its doors to pupils on 3 September 2008 and is located at the former site of St David Lewis RC Primary School in Bettws. 29 children from across the west of Newport attended the school in starter classes for nursery, reception and year 1.

The school has been named after Ifor Hael (Ifor the Generous). Ifor ap Llywelyn of Bassaleg was the son of Llywelyn ap Ifor and Angharad Morgan of Tredegar, and lived at the court Gwern y Cleppa in Tredegar in the 14th Century. He sponsored the poet Dafydd ap Gwilym, who named him Ifor Hael in his poetry, which talked of nobility and a fair lordship at Bassaleg. Dafydd ap Gwilym’s contribution to Welsh poetry and the Welsh language was very important and it’s due to Ifor Hael’s generosity and many like him that we have such a rich Welsh heritage today.
